University Fitness Center offers a specialty class in tai chi, a Chinese martial art practiced using softness and relaxation.
The class is taught by Suzanne Martin.
The slow, mindful movements of tai chi, combined with deep breathing, guide bodies and minds to balance, strength, flexibility and calm. Research findings suggest that practicing tai chi may improve balance and stability in older people and those with Parkinson’s, reduce pain from knee osteoarthritis, help people cope with fibromyalgia and back pain and promote quality of life and mood in people with heart failure and cancer.
The class is offered in a six-week session, 5:45 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 18 to Oct. 23. Cost is $60 in advance, or $65 paid on the first day of class. The program is open to both fitness center members and non-members. See class details and register online here.
