The Pennsylvania Department of Health is inviting written commentary on health research priorities for tobacco settlement funds for fiscal year 2022-23.
The priorities set the topic or topics and scope in the request for applications for the Commonwealth Research Enhancement (CURE) Non-formula Tobacco Settlement Fund, which is usually around $11 million each year and typically split between three awards.
The call for written commentary to suggest topics begins the process for the non-formula grant program. The non-formula grants fund biomedical, clinical and health services projects only. These three areas are defined as:
- Biomedical research: aims to prevent and treat diseases that cause illness and death in people and animals
- Clinical research: determines the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use
- Health services: examines access to, and the use, costs, quality, delivery, organization, financing and outcome of health care services
To be successful, proposals need to involve teams collaborating from more than one Pennsylvania institution. Partners do not need to be identified in the commentary stage.
Individuals are encouraged to submit written commentary through Penn State InfoReady to help identify common themes. Although comments may be submitted independently to the Department of Health, those who submit through InfoReady by May 28, 2021, may benefit from additional strategic support. A virtual meeting for investigators who submit comments through InfoReady will be set for early June, if warranted.
