As the Northeast braces for the first significant snowstorm of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 16, employees should take appropriate precautions. Those who can work from home should. Employees whose work requires them to be on-site should prepare for potentially difficult driving conditions. We are encouraging you to plan ahead and have a safe plan to be at work.

Due to COVID, Hershey Medical Center and Holy Spirit Medical Center are unable to accommodate staff who wish to spend the night in their facilities.

HERSHEY MEDICAL CENTER
Based upon the current predictions for at least eight inches of snow in the region, employees who are unable to commute to and from work because of the snowstorm may ask their manager for approval to stay at local hotels that have a preferred rate. These include The Hershey Lodge, the Hilton Garden Inn, the Holiday Inn Express, Days Inn, Tru by Hilton Hershey and Fairfield by Marriott. If approved, the employee would need to make the reservation and provide their work ID at check-in. People who are part of the same household may stay in the same room.

Hershey Medical Center leaders will continue to monitor the weather reports throughout the evening. If there are any changes to this plan, managers will be alerted in Manager Update tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 16. They should be prepared to share updated information with their teams.

HOLY SPIRIT MEDICAL CENTER
Holy Spirit Medical Center advises staff to bring extra clothing, etc., in case they need to stay at work. The medical center is coordinating hotel accommodations for Wednesday night. Employees who anticipate needing a hotel room should complete this form, and they will be contacted to finalize arrangements. Reservations made directly with the Radisson or outside of this process will not be covered by Penn State Health. The employee shuttle may be able to provide transportation to and from the Radisson and can be reached at 717-315-1321.

ST. JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER
St. Joseph Medical Center has some options for staff to spend the night, but they must work through their managers. Several nearby hotels are offering discounted rates to St. Joseph employees:

  • Holiday Inn + Suites (next to the airport) – 610-372-0700. St. Joseph special rate is $100 per night.
  • Hampton Inn – 610-378-8100. St. Joseph special rate is $102 per night if the person calling uses the rate code of T2X.
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott – Address: 21 Meridian Blvd., Reading, PA 19610. Phone: 610-376-4400. St. Joseph special rate is approximately $125 per night.

ALL EMPLOYEES
Anyone who cannot work from home is asked to prepare for the potential of a disruptive snowstorm by taking the following actions:

  • Make sure there is plenty of fuel in your vehicle’s tank.
  • Make sure you have plenty of windshield washer fluid.
  • Pack water, a few snacks and any necessary medications in case of unexpected traffic issues.
  • Allow extra time to get to work.
  • Drive slowly and be prepared for traffic and delays.
  • Dress warmly with proper headwear and footwear.
  • Pack a change of clothes, extra work clothes and items such as toiletries in case you choose to stay at a nearby hotel instead of commuting home after your shift.
