Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine’s 2020 United Way campaign kicks off today and runs through Friday, Nov. 20. This year, instead of focusing on a dollar amount goal, we’d like to increase the percentage of employees who give to United Way through payroll deduction.
“We know it’s been a challenging year for everyone, but for some families in our community, it’s been especially devastating,” said Steve Massini, Penn State Health CEO. “By supporting the United Way, we can help our community put the pieces back together and build a better tomorrow.”

Employees can direct their pledges to specific nonprofit organizations or to United Way’s general campaign.
How to Give
- Hershey Medical Center, Shared Services and Medical Group employees: Visit United to Give to make a donation. You will be guided through the pledge process step by step.
- College of Medicine employees: Fill out the College of Medicine United Way pledge form attached to the email sent today by Kevin Black, interim dean, and Massini, or download it from Box (Penn State access ID login required). Save and email it to UnitedWayPayroll@psu.edu. The form includes instructions on how to pledge.
- St. Joseph employees: Visit uwberks.org/PSH and log in with “2972” as both the user name and password. The St. Joseph campaign supports United Way of Berks County. It launched on Sept 16 and runs through Oct 31 with an employee giving goal of $20,000.
Ready for School, Ready to Succeed
While the United Way of the Capital Region has many worthwhile initiatives, this year Penn State Health and the College of Medicine are focusing on its “Ready for School, Ready to Succeed” program, which prepares young children both socially and academically for school.
The program has helped 430 children ages 3 to 5 enroll in kindergarten and 255 more enroll in preschool. It costs approximately $518,500 to support the work of eight education liaisons who carry out the program.
“This program has made a significant difference in the lives of the children enrolled,” said Tiffany Leidy, education liaison. “I’ve seen them grow and become more confident and better prepared to learn.”
