As the first step in a systemwide rollout, Penn State Health and the College of Medicine will begin pilot testing contactless, anonymous, thermal temperature scan kiosks on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the south entrance of Hershey Medical Center.

Two kiosks will be installed at the entrance alongside the staffed screening stations still in place.

To use them, employees and students simply stand in front of the kiosk and have their temperature taken anonymously through a thermal scan. Their temperatures appear on the screen, along with customized messages and instructions. If the temperature reads above 100.4 degrees, employees should go home and contact their manager and the Employee Health office. Students should leave the building and contact the Student Health office.

The pilot test is part of a phased installation of similar kiosks at all Penn State Health and College of Medicine locations. The effort is meant to establish a safe, sustainable, long-term process. The kiosks don’t require physical contact, limiting the chances for spreading the virus, and are completely anonymous.

All employees, students and providers must continue to monitor themselves for COVID-19 symptoms and complete on-site symptom screening for each scheduled day of work before reporting to their work location.
